Welcome to MOVIE MUSIC MANIA, where we talk about some of the amazing music that shapes the films we love. This week we take a look at the score behind David Fincher's award-winning film...THE SOCIAL NETWORK.
Famous collaborators of Fincher, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor tackle the score for the already immaculate film, The Social Network. This film has a lot of subtle moments in terms of score. It's very in your face in terms of dialogue and drama through the actors acting alongside each other. But in terms of how Fincher likes things to come together in his film, the camera work and especially the score takes a much more subtle approach. The best example, of the score playing a minimalist role in the film is in the opening scene.
The score for The Social Network acts as a climatic explosion to scenes filled with tension. In almost every moment of the movie, something is revealed or discovered through the dialogue, and the score is the cherry on top of this drama and tension. Whenever something is revealed or a new piece of drama unfolds, the score is there to leave us in absolute disbelief of what just happened.
Fincher is a master of drama and creating tension between characters in his world. Everything that happens in Fincher's world is a product of one person wanting one thing and another person wanting another thing. And when one person cannot have what they want, this reckons chaos within Fincher's world. And no better masterful musicians than Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor help materialize this style and persona of filmmaking. And on that note I leave you with my second personal favorite scene from the film. My first favorite is the opening scene, but for sake of not repeating myself, I give you this scene.
