WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Sully' Dominates, While Newcomers Fail To Perform

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of September 16-18 were Sully, Blair Witch, and Bridget Jones's Baby.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The biggest surprise to me was the lackluster performance of new horror sequel, Blair Witch, which I had expected would take the top spot, but instead came in second with less than $10 million.  Another surprise was the new Joseph Gordon Levitt film Snowden which didn't even crack the Top 3, brining in only $8 million on a $40 million production budget.  None of the new films this week broke $10 million, which is very disappointing.

THE TOP 3:

1. SULLY

Tom Hanks' newest film, Sully, managed to score the top spot at the box office again this weekend, bringing in $21.7 million, a drop of only 38.2% from its opening weekend.  This puts its domestic total at $70.2 million, with a worldwide total of $94.5 million on a $60 million production budget.

2. BLAIR WITCH

This year's latest horror film, Blair Witch, hit theaters this weekend with a surprisingly low box office take, making only $9.6 million.  It did manage to wrangle up $4.9 million overseas for a worldwide total of $14.5 million.  And on a $5 million production budget, I'd say that's quite a successful opening weekend.

3. BRIDGET JONES'S BABY

The third film in the Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones's Baby, hit theaters this weekend to a disappointing domestic total, bringing in only $8.6 million.  However, the same can't be said for its foreign gross, as it brought in $29 million overseas for a worldwide total of $37.6 million on a $35 million production budget.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Sully - $21,653,017

#2 - Blair Witch - $9,576,057

#3 - Bridget Jones's Baby - $8,571,785

#4 - Snowden - $8,000,058
