WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Suicide Squad' Takes Quite A Hit, But Manages To Stay On Top

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of August 12-14 were Suicide Squad, Sausage Party, and Pete's Dragon..

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

All three of the top films this week stand out to me for different reasons.  First, it's not surprising that Suicide Squad took the top spot, but it was quite a surprise to see that it too such a big drop in its second week.  Next is Sausage Party, which actually did much better than I had anticipated, nearly doubling its production budget in its first weekend.  This definitely bodes well for future R-rated animated films.  And lastly is Pete's Dragon, which severely underperformed, and will be lucky just to break even when all is said and done.  It's a good thing Disney has the MCU and Star Wars to pad their bank accounts.

THE TOP 3:

1. SUICIDE SQUAD

DC's latest film, Suicide Squad, dominated the box office yet again this week, however it did take quite a dip, dropping 67.4% to bring in only $43.5 million.  But, even with the steep second weekend drop, it managed a domestic total of $222.6 million and a worldwide total of $466 million, and should cross $500 million before the weekend.

2. SAUSAGE PARTY

The brand new R-rated animated comedy from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party, hit theaters this weekend, and even though it didn't take the top spot, managed to do exceedingly well.  The film brought in a domestic total of $34.3 million and small foreign gross for a worldwide total of $36.9 million on a mere $19 million production budget.

3. PETE'S DRAGON

Disney's latest venture, the updated reboot of Pete's Dragon, had a bit of a lackluster opening, bringing in only $21.5 million.  This is pretty disappointing, especially after The BFG failed to impress audiences as well.  Combined with a small foreign gross, Pete's Dragon managed to gather up a worldwide total of $26.8 million on a $65 million production budget.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Suicide Squad - $43,536,013

#2 - Sausage Party - $34,263,534

#3 - Pete's Dragon - $21,514,095
