This Week In Movie News: 8/14 - 8/20

Hey there, movie fans!  Welcome to a new edition of THIS WEEK IN MOVIE NEWS, where we compile all the top movie news for the week and bring it to you all in one convenient place.  So, without further ado, here's the news:

ZENDAYA REPORTLY PLAYING MARY JANE WATSON IN UPCOMING SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Back in March, it was announced that Zendaya would be joining the cast of the upcoming Sony/Marvel Spider-Man reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming, but her role was left a mystery.  Well, it seems that the mystery may be over as its being reported that she'll be playing Peter Parker's classic love interest, Mary Jane Watson.

Mary Jane was previously played by Kirsten Dunst in the Tobey McGuire films, and was set to be played by Shailene Woodley in the Andrew Garfield series before it's inevitable demise.  Further details about this version of the character are currently unknown.  Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on June 7, 2017.

SUICIDE SQUAD SOUNDTRACK DEBUTS AT #1

Just like its film counterpart, the Suicide Squad soundtrack debuted at #1 this past week.  Suicide Squad: The Album managed to take the top spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart, selling over 182,000 units for its release.  Further, Suicide Squad posts the biggest debut sales week for a soundtrack in 18 months, since the Fifty Shades of Grey album launched at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 210,000 sold back in February 2015.

JOHN WILLIAMS BEGINS SCORING STAR WARS: EPISODE 8 NEXT MONTH

The brilliant composer behind many of Hollywood's greatest films, John Williams, will be returning to the franchise he is best known for as he is set to begin scoring Star Wars: Episode 8 next month.  At the annual John Williams' Film Night, the iconic composer told the crowd that he would begin work on the Episode 8 score in just a few weeks after recently seeing an early cut of the film.  Williams is currently also signed on to score Episode 9 as well as Spielberg's Ready Player One and Indiana Jones.

HENRY CAVILL POSTS TEASER IMAGE OF POSSIBLE BLACK SUPERMAN SUIT

It seems that the classic black Superman suit from the Death and Return of Superman storyline will be used in the upcoming DCEU film Justice League.  Superman himself, Henry Cavill, posted a tease on Instagram of a close up of what we are all assuming is his new suit.

Not much else is know about his return.  Will he have the classic long hair?  Will he have a beard?  Find out when Justice League hits theaters on November 17, 2017.

DOOMED!, A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ROGER CORMAN'S FAILED FANTASTIC FOUR FILM, FINALLY GETS RELEASE DATE

The Fantastic Four franchise has never really taken off on the big screen, with the 2005 film (and its sequel) and the 2015 reboot failing critically, and financially for the latter.  But the story doesn't start there.  Back in 1994, director Roger Corman took on the challenge of making a live action Fantastic Four film, which fortunately, never got released (although it is available as a bootleg if you know where to look).

Then back in 2014, a trailer for a documentary about the making of the infamous film was released, titled Doomed! The Story of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four, and now it's finally getting released.  Check out the trailer below:

Doomed! has been acquired for distribution by Uncork'd Entertainment and will be released on VOD on October 11 and on DVD on December 20.

SAW 8 GETS AN OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE

It looks like the horror franchise that jump started the "torture porn" genre isn't done just yet.  The eighth installment of the Saw franchise, tentatively titled Saw: Legacy, has an official release date, and will be hitting theaters during a very familiar timeframe, right around Halloween.

Little is known about the film, and various plot rumors have surfaced including that this film will be a prequel about Jigsaw's first trap or that a person or group of people are inspired by Jigsaw and take up the mantle, both of which could explain the title Saw: Legacy.

Saw: Legacy hits theaters on October 27, 2017.

NEW IMAGE OF POWER RANGERS VILLAIN RITA REPULSA RELEASED

A new photo from the upcoming Power Rangers reboot has surfaced (as seen above), featuring the film's main villain, Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks), in what is presumably her 10,000 year prison.  This version of Rita is very different than that of the original series, yet fans have been surprisingly positive about it.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Power Rangers hits theaters on March 24, 2017.

BRAND NEW FULL IMAGE RELEASED OF PENNYWISE THE CLOWN FROM UPCOMING IT REBOOT

Stephen King's IT is finally making its way to the big screen, and we have the first full look at the films villain, Pennywise (seen below).  Bill SkarsgĂ„rd will be donning the makeup as Pennywise the Clown in this new adaption, a role made famous by the very talented Tim Currey.  This version is going to be a much darker version than the 1990 miniseries, and will be rated R.

Stephen King's IT hits theaters on September 8, 2017.

CYBORG TO APPEAR IN FLASH STANDALONE FILM

In true comic book fashion, DC's upcoming film, The Flash, will feature not only the Scarlet Speedster, but also another member of the Justice League...Cyborg.  It's still unknown what his role will be in the film or how big of a role it'll actually be, but some rumors suggest that their team-up may lead into a Teen Titans film, which has been rumored to replace the Cyborg standalone film.

You can see both The Flash and Cyborg in Justice League on November 7, 2017, while The Flash hits theaters on March 16, 2018.

BATMAN '66 CREW RETURNS FOR NEW ANIMATED FILM

A brand new DC animated film is on the way and it will reunite some of the stars of the classic 1966 Batman television series.  Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar will be reprising their characters of Batman, Robin, and Catwoman in the new animated film Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, and it as fantastic hearing their voices again.  Check out the fun, campy, very meta trailer below:

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will be released on Digital HD on October 11th and Blu-ray on November 1st.

CLUE REMAKE ON THE WAY

A remake of the classic murder mystery film Clue, based on the hit board game, has landed at 20th Century Fox.  The original film, which came out in 1985, initially received mixed reviews and did very poorly at the box office, but has garnered quite a cult following in the years since.  So, it was quite a shock to hear that a remake was on the way.  Will they be able to recapture the magic of the original film, with the cheeky humor and multiple endings?

According to the report by The Tracking Board, the screenplay will reconceive the single-house parkour mystery as a globe-trotting thriller with deductive reasoning at its core.  Little else is known about the film and no release date has been set.

NATALIE PORTMAN SAYS SHE'S DONE WITH MARVEL FILMS

Don't expect to see Jane Foster anytime soon as actress Natalie Portman recently told the Wall Street Journal that she probably won't be making further appearances in the MCU.

"As far as I know, I'm done," she told the newspaper.  "I mean, I don't know if maybe one day they'll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, I have no idea.  But as far as I know, I'm done, but it was a great thing to be a part of."

This comes as no surprise as Marvel head Kevin Feige previously stated that Portman would not be appearing in the upcoming third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok, which hits theaters on November 3, 2017.

JARED LETO JOINS BLADE RUNNER SEQUEL

Academy Award winner Jared Leto has joined the cast of the upcoming Blade Runner sequel alongside Ryan Gosling and a returning Harrison Ford.  The sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic is set several decades after the original, with Ford reprising his iconic role as Rick Deckard.  It'll be directed by Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve.

Blade Runner 2 will hit theaters on October 6, 2017.
