WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Finding Dory' Dominates Yet Again, While 'The BFG' Struggles To Make Waves

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of July 1-3 were Finding Dory, The Legend of Tarzan, and The Purge: Election Year.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

Seeing Finding Dory dominate yet another week was definitely a surprise with the new releases that hit theaters this week.  But the biggest surprise, in my opinion, was the unexpected failure of film legend Steven Spielberg's new film, The BFG, which only managed to hit #4 with a mere $18.6 million on a $140 million production budget.

THE TOP 3:

1. FINDING DORY

The newest film from animation juggernaut PIXAR and long-awaited sequel, Finding Dory, took the top spot for the third week in a row, bringing in another $41.4 million a drop of only 43.2% from last week.  This put it's domestic total at $380.5 million, with a worldwide total of $548.3 million on a $200 million production budget.

2. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN

The newest take on the Tarzan story, The Legend of Tarzan, hit theaters this week and did much better than anticipated.  Pulling in $38.5 million, Tarzan managed to almost double its original estimates of around $20 million.  Combined with the foreign grosses, it was able to land a mediocre worldwide total of $57.3 million on a rather large $180 million production budget.

3. THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR

The third installment of the hugely popular Purge franchise, The Purge: Election Year, also hit theaters this weekend, grabbing the #3 spot with an impressive $31.4 million, an increase from the previous films opening ($29.8 million).  It has barely made a splash overseas yet, with only $130,000 in foreign grosses, but if it's anything like the last film, it'll catch up and make $100-$150 million worldwide when all is said and done.

#1 - Finding Dory - $41,411,664
