Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of July 8-10 were The Secret Life of Pets, The Legend of Tarzan, and Finding Dory.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
The obvious stand out this week is Illumination Studio's newest animated film, The Secret Life Of Pets, which made an impressive $104 million, exceeding all expectations. I was also surprised to see Tarzan hold its spot at #2 this week, especially with such negative reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes score of only 36%.
THE TOP 3:
1. THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS
The newest animated film from the makers of Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, hit theaters this weekend, and completely blew away the competition, bringing in a staggering $104.4 million, beating out recent animated gems like Inside Out and Zootopia. Combined with the foreign grosses, The Secret Life of Pets managed a worldwide total of $147.1 million, nearly doubling its modest production budget of only $75 million.
2. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN
The newest take on the Tarzan story, The Legend of Tarzan, had another decent weekend, pulling in $21 million, a drop of only 45.5%. This puts its domestic total at $81.8 and its worldwide total at $137.8 million on a $180 million production budget. As of week two, it seems to be struggling to hit its production budget, so whether or not it'll make a profit is yet to be seen.
3. FINDING DORY
The newest film from animation juggernaut Pixar and long-awaited sequel, Finding Dory, took a bit of a drop in its fourth week, dropping two spots to #3. Dory managed to bring in $20.8 million, dropping 50.2% from last week. This put it's domestic total at $423 million, with an impressive worldwide total of $644.8 million on a $200 million production budget.
