Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of June 17-19 were Finding Dory, Central Intelligence, and The Conjuring 2.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
The biggest thing this week, hands down, is the mega opening for Finding Dory. Bringing in over $135 million in its opening weekend, it broke records, and will hopefully serve as a sign of good things to come from one of the best animation studios around.
THE TOP 3:
1. FINDING DORY
The newest film from animation juggernaut PIXAR and long-awaited sequel, Finding Dory, hit theaters this weekend with a bang. Bringing in an astonishing $135 million, it nearly doubled that of Finding Nemo's $70.2 million opening back in 2003, giving it the honor of breaking the record for largest opening for an animated feature. Combined with it's foreign grosses, Finding Dory pulled in a worldwide total of $185.7 million.
2. CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
The other film to open this week was the Kevin Hart/Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson comedy, Central Intelligence, which brought in a respectable $35.5 million. Combined with it's foreign grosses, the film managed a worldwide total of $42.7 million on a $50 million production budget. If it can continue to do well, I have no doubt we will see a sequel in the near future.
3. THE CONJURING 2
The newest film by horror master James Wan, The Conjuring 2, took a bit of a dip at the box office this weekend, bringing in $14.9 million, a drop of 63.2% from last week. This puts its domestic total at $71.1 million, with a worldwide total of $188.6 million on a modest $40 million production budget. The studio has already green lit a spinoff about the demon nun, and will no doubt go forward with The Conjuring 3.
