WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Finding Dory' Makes A Big Splash In Second Weekend; 'Free State of Jones' Bombs

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of June 24-26 were Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, and Central Intelligence.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

There are two main things that stand out to me this week.  The first is the obvious success of Pixar's new film, Finding Dory, which pulled in over $70 million in its second weekend.  This film is on its way to being a member of the Billion Dollar Club.  The second is Free State of Jones, the new Matthew McConaughey film.  Opening this week, it barely made it into the Top 5, making less than $8 million on a $50 million production budget.  Reviews have been very bad for this film, so don't expect it to do much better.  Does this mark the end of the McCon-aissance? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

THE TOP 3:

1. FINDING DORY

The newest film from animation juggernaut PIXAR and long-awaited sequel, Finding Dory, hit theaters last weekend with a bang, bringing in an astonishing $135 million.  This week it managed to drop only 45.8%, bringing in $73.2 million,  which is more than its predecessor made on its opening weekend back in 2003.  This put it's domestic total at $286.6 million, with a worldwide total of $398.5 million on a $200 million production budget.

2. INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE

Roland Emmerich's ID4 sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, failed to live up to its predecessor, which made over $50 million on its opening weekend 20 years ago.  Resurgence brought in $41.6 million domestically, but did manage a worldwide total of $141.1 million on a $165 million production budget.

3. CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

The new Kevin Hart/Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson comedy, Central Intelligence, managed to hold on to a spot in the Top 3 this week, making $18.4 million.  This brings it's domestic total up to $69.3 million, with a worldwide total of $83.6 million on a $50 million production budget.  If it can continue to do well, I have no doubt we will see a sequel in the near future.
