Why Haven't I Seen That?: ROMAN HOLIDAY

Welcome to a new installment of WHY HAVEN'T I SEEN THAT?, where we talk about a must-see or iconic movie that we have never seen...until now. This week we take a look at the 1953 Audrey Hepburn classic...ROMAN HOLIDAY.  Enjoy.

As a lover of classical cinema, I'm surprised that it's taken me this long to see this film. Roman Holiday is a romantic comedy starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, which came out in 1953 and was directed by William Wyler.

Roman Holiday was filmed entirely in Rome and the scenic design was absolutely beautiful. Sometimes a location can make or break a film, and in the case of Roman Holiday, it was definitely the former. This film was a pleasure to watch and I plan on watching it again. I enjoyed it so much due to its beautiful locations and fantastic performances. Audrey Hepburn is also one of my favorite actresses from that time period, and I’ll watch pretty much anything she’s in. I did also really enjoy Gregory Peck’s performance as the newsman who falls for her.

Hepburn plays an unfulfilled princess named Ann who travels to Rome on a political tour. Ann is restless and wants to explore Rome, but her lady in waiting will not allow her to do so. She wanders off and is found by Peck's character, Joe Bradley. He's actually a newsman and tries to use the princess for an exclusive story. However, in true rom-com style, he ends up falling for her and can’t go through with it.

Throughout the day, Ann and Joe have many adventures together. One of the funniest being when Ann gets all her hair cut off and then they go dancing. The police arrive and there is total chaos. However, the princess and the newsman are able to escape. Ann is having the time of her life, but she realizes that she has a duty to her country. Their goodbye saddened me, but all wonderful things must come to an end. One of my favorite scenes in this film was when Princess Ann was being introduced to all the dignitaries and her shoe fell off. Audrey Hepburn had great timing during that scene.

Roman Holiday is a perfect movie to me because of the entertaining plot and superb acting. It also doesn't hurt that Audrey Hepburn plays the leading lady! I highly recommend this film to any Audrey fan. Anyone who loved Breakfast at Tiffany's would adore this film. If you are looking for a great date movie, then this is perfect. So grab your honey, some popcorn and ENJOY!!

Lisa’s Score: 10/10
