WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Marvel's 'Captain America: Civil War' Dominates The Box Office With $179.1 Million Opening

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 6-8 were Captain America: Civil WarThe Jungle Book, and Mother's Day.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The Marvel Money Machine is in full steam this week, bringing in almost $180 million in the US and totaling almost $500 million just in foreign sales.  We also saw a holiday-based boost in sales for the film Mother's Day, causing it to move up to the #3 spot this week.

THE TOP 3:

1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Marvel Studio's newest venture, and the third installment of the Captain America series, Captain America: Civil War, hit theaters in the US this weekend (and opened in several overseas markets the week prior) and was able to make big waves bringing in a very impressive $179.1 million.  With the week head start overseas, it managed a foreign gross of $494 million to bring its worldwide total to a whopping $673.1 million.  It's already the fifth-highest grossing MCU film, and with such positive reviews it could rival Avengers for the top spot.

2. THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016)

Jon Favreau's live-action adaptation of the 1967 animated Disney classic, The Jungle Book, managed to dominate the box office yet again in its fourth weekend, bringing in another $24.5 million, a drop of only 44% from last weekend.  That puts its domestic total at $287.6  million and its worldwide total at $779.2 million on a $175 million production budget.  At this rate, it'll have no problem hitting $1 billion when all is said and done.

3. MOTHER'S DAY

The new Jennifer Aniston/Julia Roberts film, Mother's Day, had a nice surge of interest during this Mother's Day weekend, bringing in $11.1 million, an impressive 32.5% increase from last week's poor opening of $8.4 million.  This brings its domestic total up to a still disappointing $22.8 million on a $25 million production budget.
