WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Captain America' Leads Marvel To Another Weekend On Top, Bringing In Nearly $1 Billion Worldwide

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 13-15 were Captain America: Civil WarThe Jungle Book, and Money Monster.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

It's no surprise that Captain America: Civil War held on to the top spot, with The Jungle Book right behind it.  The competition, after all, was pretty slim.  The biggest thing that stands out to me, though, is how strong the legs on The Jungle Book have been, with a very small drop from last week, ever while up again the juggernaut that is Captain America: Civil War.

THE TOP 3:

1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Marvel Studio's newest hit, and the third installment of the Captain America series, Captain America: Civil War, dominated the box office again this week, bringing in another $72.6 million.  This brings its domestic total up to $296 million and its worldwide total to an outstanding $943 million.  There's no doubt that it'll hit $1 billion within the next few days, making it the fourth MCU film to do so, joining Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3.

2. THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016)

Jon Favreau's live-action adaptation of the 1967 animated Disney classic, The Jungle Book, slid down to #2 this weekend, bringing in $17.1 million, a drop of only 30.1% from last weekend.  That puts its domestic total at $311.1  million and its worldwide total at $828 million on a $175 million production budget.  Since its release, it has yet to cross the 50% drop off point between weekends, and if it continues like this, it'll have no problem hitting $1 billion when all is said and done.

3. MONEY MONSTER

The new Jodie Foster-directed film, Money Monster, starring George Clooney, opened up this weekend and managed to grab the #3 spot, bring in $14.8 million.  Combined with its limited overseas openings this weekend, Money Monster settles with a worldwide opening of $19.5 million on a $27 million production budget.
