EDITORIAL: My Thoughts on the Upcoming Power Rangers Movie

Cards on the table here: I am, or at least was when I was younger, a BIG fan of Power Rangers. Back in the day, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was one of my favorite shows, and I followed it up until the SPD/Mystic Force series around 2005-06. I haven't kept up with the shw since then, but I have tons of unbridled nostalgia for a lot of the old Power Rangers series, especially Mighty Morphin, so I was excited as hell when I found out they were making a new movie.

As much as I liked the first two movies, even I have to admit they're pretty terrible. Much of the reason I like them, though, is for nostalgia, but with this, I have high hopes that it could be something great. Today, I specifically want to talk about the images recently released about the movie, especially the new suits.

Jumping into that, I'll say that when I first saw these new suits, shown above, I absolutely loved them. Since first seeing them, however, I have somewhat cooled off on them, though still really like them. The battle armor look I think really works, and I think making them look more technological and metallic is great. The spandex really wouldn't work in a more realistic movie, I think. In hindsight, though, I can definitely see what people are complaining about. I won't say they've been overdesigned, but they're teetering pretty close to that. In particular, I think the chest piece does look kind of ridiculous. A lot of people have made comparisons to the Iron Man armor, and I definitely see that, but I have a feeling that the suits will look better in motion. Plus, aesthetically, it DOES match what the new Rita Repulsa, played by Elizabeth Banks, looks like.

What I AM happy about is that they seem to be sticking, at least conceptually, to what Power Rangers is about. This is especially clear given that, regardless of what the suits look like, the helmets are pretty accurate to the original show. I'm still waiting for who's playing Zordon and Alpha-5, because you know they're at the very least bring Zordon into it.

I can't really speak much to the director, Dean Israelite, since he hasn't done a whole lot, and nothing I've seen, but part of me is actually comfortable with that. New talent always has the potential of really showing what they're made of. Same goes for new talent in terms of acting. Having Elizabeth Banks as the villain is great, but I'm really eager to see how well these new Rangers do.

What do you think of the new suits? Love em? Hate em? Why? Let me know in the comments, and I'll catch you on the flip side.
