WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Zootopia' Stands Strong For Another Week While 'Allegiant' Has Disappointing Opening

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of March 18-20 were ZootopiaThe Divergent Series: Allegiant, and Miracles From Heaven.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

Seeing Allegiant only make barely more than half what the previous films opened with was quite the disappointment.  I figured it wouldn't make as much as the others but thought it would make around $10-15 million more than it did.

This was also the first week that Deadpool wasn't in the Top 3, however, it's only $11 million away from beating The Matrix Reloaded to become the highest worldwide grossing R-rated film of all time.

Disney Animation's newest film, Zootopia, dominated the box office for the third week in a row, dropping only 27.6% to bring in another $37.2 million.  This puts its domestic total at $200.9 million and its worldwide total at an impressive $593.5 million, and with no other animated films coming out for over a month, Zootopia is sure to continue to rise, hitting high numbers by the end of it's run.

The latest installment in the Divergent series, Allegiant, hit theaters this week to a subpar opening of $29 million, just barely more than half what the other two films opened with.  It did manage to bring in a decent amount overseas to give the film a worldwide total of $83 million.  With Batman v Superman opening next week, it'll have a hard time reaching the almost $300 million worldwide total of the previous films in the series.

The new faith-based film, Miracles From Heaven, opened up this weekend, just in time for Easter, and managed to grab the #3 spot.  This film joins two other religious films in theaters right now, Risen and The Young Messiah.  Miracles From Heaven opened with $14.8 million, bringing in more than its production budget of only $13 million, and with Easter coming next weekend, it's sure to get some good business.
