Collider reported yesterday that not only was a sequel on the way, but that it was actually done. And they were right. With the release of a poster and trailer, we now know that the film will be coming out in less than two months.
Paramount Pictures also released this exclusive statement from J.J. Abrams himself confirming the news:
"The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of CLOVERFIELD. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible."
As stated in the quote, Abrams calls this film a "blood relative" of the first, which makes me believe that it won't be a direct sequel, but more of a spin-off, existing up within the same universe. Also, it should be noted that this time around the story will NOT be told using found-footage.
Star of the film, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, spoke with Collider, telling them that the film revolves around a woman who wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept by a stranger, played by Goodman. The actress elaborated on the plot by saying the following:
“He tells me that basically the world is over outside because there’s been a nuclear fall-out. It does have similarity to Faults, in some ways, because you don’t know who’s telling the truth or who to believe. There’s a lot of, who’s manipulating who, and all of that. Tonally, it’s very different, but it has some of those same themes.”
Here is the poster for the film:
And here is the teaser trailer:
10 Cloverfield Lane stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr. and hits theaters on March 11, 2016.
