Welcome to BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of August 7-9 were Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Fantastic Four, and The Gift.
1. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION
During its second week in theaters, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation managed to take the top spot yet again, bringing another $28.5 million for an overall domestic total of $107.8 million and a worldwide total of $264.5 million. And with numbers like this we will most likely see a sixth installment of this franchise soon.
2. FANTASTIC FOUR
Amidst a slew of extremely negative reviews, Fox's newest Marvel film, Fantastic Four, had a very disappointing opening weekend, bringing in only $25.7 million domestically and $59.8 million worldwide. It is very unclear if this film will be able to make a profit or not, but the outlook is not good. However, Fox has issued a statement saying that they are still committed to this franchise, so we will have to wait and see if a sequel is actually made.
3. THE GIFT
The Gift, which opened this week in only 1,648 theaters, was able to rake in $11.9 million on only a $5 million production budget. This is a very good start for first-time director and star of the film, Joel Edgerton and Blumhouse productions.
Here's a quick rundown of the top 10 films this weekend:
#1 - Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - $28,502,372
#2 - Fantastic Four - $25,685,737
